You know relying on food to reward yourself when you are overwhelmed by emotion has its drawbacks…

yet it can be so incredibly hard to stop

As soon as (or even before) you finish eating whatever food was handy and available, you realize what just happened—once again, you tried to feel less by eating more.

Another cycle of shame, and guilt, and even disappointment starts. You feel embarrassed of what others might think (if they knew). Tired of the way eating to manage your emotions chips away your confidence, your power, your trust in yourself.

Hi, I’m Dr. Claudia

My life shaped me to be drawn to help others in their journey of life and with a passion toward understanding the mind-body connection. This calling left me no choice other than to become a licensed therapist.

Helping others overcome and conquer their patterns of emotional eating is a significant part of my work in the world—and one that is near and dear to my heart. I help people by bringing awareness and insight into how our emotions trigger our behaviors (in our case, eating).

OK, so I get what is driving my emotional eating. Now what?

Understanding what motivates our desire to eat when not truly hungry is one of the most powerful tools to regain control over our emotional eating.

Here’s a tip that can be helpful—if you can work toward developing the awareness of why is it that you are heading to the kitchen (or stopping by the drive through) when feeling certain kinds of overwhelming emotions, that’s huge.

A powerful question we can ask ourselves in the moment may be: What is missing in this very moment? What is it that I am looking for in food that I do not feel already?

It is key to ask these questions with compassion, knowing that there is nothing wrong or bad about what we are doing.

Food might be an avenue in which we are trying to meet a need. Perhaps the need to share with our old pal, food, some happy times.

To get a handle on your emotional eating in a long-lasting way we need to shift the way we relate to the feelings that trigger the emotional eating in the first place.

This involves relying on emotional regulation skills that allow us to navigate our most triggering emotions without over-relying on food.

The path toward freeing ourselves from emotional eating may not always be smooth…

but with the proper guidance it can be not only doable but liberating.

Whether it is having having a contained space to look deeply at how this dynamic is impacting your life, developing insights that can sustain you as you make different choices, or gradually developing the vision of who you can be if food were not to be center stage in your life, I am here to help.
