Eating out of stress and anxiety..? Tell me more.
Your job is driving you crazy. The amount of pressure and stress you feel about deadlines and performance expectations makes your anxiety to skyrocket.
And, you love your family to pieces but the stress and overwhelm to be the one responsible for the kids’ behavior and academic performance, neatness of the house, and food being served is just T-O-O M-U-C-H.
So, you feel you need a break. You kind of deserve it. So the next thing you know you are munching on a bag of chips you didn’t even know was there. Or you are devouring those tempting chocolate chip cookies. Or finishing the leftovers from last night without even heating them.
Or, if you were on your way home, you can’t resist stopping at your favorite restaurant to pick-up take out. Or, when finally everyone is in bed, now is your time to enjoy a little something after a crazy day—
BUT— it’s SO hard to stop once we start eating.. I mean, a crazy level of stress seems to demand greater amounts of relief, right?
Relying on food to help us manage stress or anxiety has its drawbacks though..
But as soon as (or even before) you finish eating whatever food was handy and available, you realize what just happened—once again, you tried to keep your anxiety or stress at bay by eating more.
Another cycle of shame, and guilt, and even disappointment starts. You feel embarrassed of what others might think (if they knew). Tired of the way eating to manage your emotions chips away your confidence, your power, your trust in yourself. What started because you wanted relief ends up being a huge burden.
OK, so I get what is driving my emotional eating. Now what?
Understanding what motivates our desire to eat when not truly hungry is one of the most powerful tools to regain control over our emotional eating.
Here’s a tip that can be helpful—if you can work toward developing the awareness of why is it that you are heading to the kitchen (or stopping by the drive through) when feeling anxious or stressed, that’s huge.
A powerful question we can ask ourselves in the moment may be: What void is the one I am trying to fill with food right now? Or maybe a reflection along the lines of, ‘My anxiety/ stress is so strong right now that I see no other choice other than to try to take the edge off with food’.
It is key to ask these questions with compassion, knowing that there is nothing wrong or bad about what you are doing
Food might be an avenue in which we are trying to meet a need. Perhaps the need to feel a bit more ease when faced with overwhelming stress or debilitating anxiety.
To get a handle on your emotional eating in a long-lasting way we need to shift the way we relate to the feelings that trigger the emotional eating in the first place.
This involves relying on new emotional regulation skills that allow us to to manage our stress or anxiety (or any other triggering emotion) without over-relying on food. More on this topic below.
